Avoiding Public Cloud Adoption Catastrophe

Why is this Transition Resulting in Runaway Costs and Unnecessary Complexity for Many Leading Organizations?

If your organization has yet to commit to the public cloud as your primary infrastructure strategy you may wish to consider yourself fortunate. And if you ARE in the public cloud and struggling to make it work in a cost-effective manner, you’re not alone.

A litany of major corporate technology leaders expressed regret to The Wall Street Journal about disappointing results in making the public cloud work for them.  They also shared their difficulties in achieving cost containment using major clouds like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

In addition to interviews with major tech executives the article references a recent KPMB survey of 1,000 senior technology leaders where 67% reported they have yet to see a significant return on cloud investments.

Global chief technology officer for Dell Technologies, Inc. John Roes told the Journal “I must have had 10 conversations last week where CIOs were bemoaning that they had run out of money or blown their budget off.”

Several C-level leaders share their view that overall complexity as well as both duplication of services and incompatibility between systems is a common problem.

Kaiser Permanente’s chief information and technology officer Diane Comer mandates a price comparison between on-premises solutions and public cloud.   “You really do need to not just take it for granted that cloud is where you should head,” she told the Journal.

The article is well worth a read.  For more information on how to evaluate whether the public cloud is the right primary infrastructure strategy for your organization read “8 Key Questions for Every Philly IT Infrastructure Decisionmaker: Will Your Data Center and Cloud Strategy Propel Your Organization to Success or Leave You Behind the Times in Our Challenging Market?,” a white paper published by Direct LTx.
