Basecamp Decamps from the Cloud. How did HEY’s Repatriation Go?
In a previous item we shared that Basecamp had decided to repatriate their born-in-the-cloud email application HEY, back to traditional data center infrastructure. The decision was primarily due to an inability to control the inability-to-accurately-budget, runaway-cost aspects of the cloud.
So how did it go?
Quite well, they report. Basecamp chief technology officer David Heinemeier Hansson led the project that pulled a half-dozen services back to servers they control instead of servers they rent from a provider. He reports that the migration was executed “without a hitch” and free of any downtime.
If you’ve got any kind of migration in your future his blog post is worth reading. Hanssen’s insight on both the operation and economics concludes, “don’t just stay in the cloud because of the hype.”
While this was clearly a well-managed project by the talented Basecamp team, our experience at Direct LTx has been that whether you’re migrating your existing data center to our colocation environment or decamping applications from the cloud, a smooth process and successful results are both attainable with the proper plan.
