Northern Virginia Hits Maximum Capacity - Is Your Data Center Solution in Pennsylvania?
In Northern Virginia’s Data Center Alley there are more than 200 operational data centers with 100+ additional projects under development. These giant, warehouse-sized buildings have gobbled up much of the open space in this formerly agricultural area and the construction of even more data centers is not viewed favorably by many of their neighbors.
The Washington Post describes the conflict between economic development and quality of life as “wrestling with the lure of landing an industry that can help fund schools and other services while causing headaches, as transmission lines cross farmland, new power plants and substations are needed to supply electricity, and consumers everywhere see increases in their electricity bills to help fund the cost to utilities.”
Pending legislation threatens to slow or even stop development in Northern Virginia at a time when data center demand is at an all-time high. This is raising interest in so-called “edge” data centers, outside of Data Center Alley.
Here in Eastern Pennsylvania, Direct LTx is attracting some of this attention. We took over an existing but abandoned technology campus in Reading and have invested over $20 million to convert it into a state-of-the-art data center. The result is a world-class colocation facility that has earned the business of the largest enterprises, the most uptime-sensitive government agencies, and innovative local startups.
Our location gives us some advantages over Northern Virginia’s data center sprawl. Although our immediate neighbor is a dairy farm, we are located in a fiber-rich nexus, with more than a dozen telecom providers, equidistant from Data Center Alley and downtown Manhattan. We have space, power, water, and other resources immediately available to accommodate the future growth of our customers.
If you have upcoming data center requirements and would like to see what repurposed sustainability looks like we’d welcome the opportunity to give you a tour, just email strategy@DirectLTx.com.
